Hackathon Practices

Digital Media in Health Communication and Literacy

3rd Edition - 2022
about this edition

The “Digital Media in Health Communication and Literacy” training activity allowed learners to be immersed in a collaborative learning environment while building digital media projects to tackle health-related problems, over an intensive 4-day programme.

In the week prior to the in-person hackathon in Porto, learners had 2 online briefing sessions, so as to adequately prepare for the hackathon.

In this edition, we were challenged to present solutions to a real health problem that affects millions of people worldwide, presented by an actual group of medical doctors, through a collaboration with a local health authority, from Porto’s metropolitan area.

Throughout the course, learners were assigned to a

multidisciplinary team and had access to “round the clock” support from Professors, who provided necessary assistance and helped ensure each project was completed on time.

The course culminated with a public session on the final day, in which learners did an elevator pitch session and presented their project to a jury, who assessed the quality and feasibility of each pitch.

Programme

Designed as an engaging and hands-on 1-week course, combining online sessions with in-person experiences, individuals were welcomed into a collaborative atmosphere. Throughout this program, diverse methodologies were explored, emphasizing the creation of adaptable science communication material in both linear and experiential formats. The course was structured around three pivotal phases: inspiration, ideation, and implementation.
